Reading TOEFL test section: this section includes about 36 to 56 questions about 3 or 4 texts so that the questions are in the form of different paragraphs followed by a number of questions.

This section will assess your understanding of details, your deductive skills, and your rhetorical abilities. You should plan to spend 20 minutes on each clip, so make sure your constant attention is on time!
      ✔️ Duration of this Section: 60 - 80 minutes

Listening TOEFL test section: in this section audio clips of lectures, dialogues or discussions are shown, followed by a set of related questions, and the number of these questions ranges from 34 to 51 questions

There are two types of audio paragraphs: conversations about the life of a residential campus and academic lectures. You will hear from 2 to 3 talks with 5 questions each and from 4 to 6 lectures with 6 questions per lecture. After the auditory section, there is a mandatory 10-minute break.

Your task is to write two essays, the first is an integrated essay based on written and audio passages, where you should summarize and write down the most essential points from what you heard. The second essay is independent, through which you have to write a convincing or descriptive essay based on the guidance.

Types of TOEFL test

The TOEFL test is actually a set of several tests aimed at students or those wishing to work abroad. It has been developed to meet the different needs of applicants. The most famous types of TOEFL tests are as follows:

1 - iBT TOEFL test:

Which is the most common around the world, and is known as the "TOEFL online test" or "Internet-Based TOEFL". It can be said that it is the academic test that measures your skills and abilities to communicate in English in the University (academic) environment.

2-TOEFL Essentials test:

As the name expresses it, is a test that measures students ' basic English skills. The most important thing that distinguishes this test from the previous one is that it is shorter in duration and somewhat easier, and focuses on English used in everyday life in addition to academic English

3-TOEFL ITP or institutional TOEFL, also known as "Institutional TOEFL":

This is used by many universities and academic institutes to measure students ' skills and competencies in English. In this test, universities conduct their own proficiency exam in English, but under the supervision and license of the ETS organization

4-TOEFL test for children:

there are two basic tests, basic TOEFL Primary for students aged 8 to 11 years. And TOEFL Junior is for students aged 11 to 16 years.

5-PBT paper TOEFL:

As the name indicates, is a written paper test that includes the same sections as the regular test, but it was discontinued and submitted in April 2021.

What is the difference between TOEFL IBT® and TOEFL® PAPER-DELIVERED TEST?

The TOEFL iBT test, which can be done online, measures reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. It is offered more than 50 times a year at selected test locations around the world.

The discontinued TOFEL PBT was a paper-and-pen test that measured reading, listening, grammar, and writing skills and was offered in places where it was not possible to take the test online.

The revised TOEFL Paper-delivered test, which replaced the TOEFL PBT paper-based test, measures reading, listening, and writing skills. And there is no conversational section in it because of the technical requirements for capturing spoken speech.

The scoring system in the TOEFL test differs depending on the type of exam, as follows:

  • TOEFL iBT (online TOEFL): between 0 and 120
  • TOEFL Essentials: between 1 and 12
  • TOEFL PBT (before being abolished in April 2021): between 310 and 677

There are also some differences in the distribution of marks between the questions in both the online TOEFL and the basic TOEFL:

In the iBT TOEFL, the final mark is calculated by adding the marks of the four sections together, because each section has the same amount of marks (30). Thus, in this test, you will get a final mark between 0 and 120 but also a separate mark for each value from the Test between 0 and 30.

In the TOEFL Essentials test, you will get a mark between 0 and 12 in each of the four sections, and the final mark is the average of the previous four marks.
It is noteworthy that this exam also includes a statement in the form of a video submitted by the student, but it is not counted in the marks.

What is the most suitable TOEFL score for me?

Most people need a specific mark on the TOEFL test to apply to the university they have chosen.
The mark that is most suitable for you, therefore, depends heavily on the university or academic institution to which you are applying.

Although the requirements may change from program to program, it is best to make sure which program or branch you are studying so that you know what result you will need. In addition, some programs may be interested in the final grade, while some may focus on each section of the exam (for example, a score of 27 is required in the written section).

Some universities or university programs require a specific value for the total TOEFL mark, while other universities may require you to have specific marks in each section of the test. In general, the higher the degree (master's or doctorate) and the larger and more famous the University, the higher the required marks.
